Remember when covid-19 first reached California? Yep, bad timing. Right before Saint Patrick’s Day.

Back in 2020, bagpiper Elise MacGregor Ferrell remembers getting called by an engaged couple who was preparing to dash to the courthouse and get married before it closed. Next thing Elise knew, she was burning rubber up to Marin, to play bagpipes – not at the courthouse – but for an extremely socially distanced backyard wedding, with most people attending on Zoom.
Fast forward a couple years, to Elise playing bagpipes for a wedding whose happy couple had waited two years to tie the Celtic knot. Watching that groom cry tears of joy made it hard for Elise not to cry with him!
Obviously the lockdown was hard on all professional musicians. Fortunately for Elise, she was able to book a few covid street parades, but otherwise, being taken offstage made one message clear: She needed to finish writing Racing the Clouds!

In August 2020, Elise launched a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign. Per Kickstarter’s rules, it was all or nothing (either reach goal on time or get zero funding). The very next week, California caught fire. Elise’s family frantically packed their van, and nearly had to evacuate, but, by some miracle, Racing the Clouds First Edition still got funded!
Ever since then, Elise has been working like mad to finish the trilogy she started writing 20 years ago. Book 1 came out December 2021. It was a Limited First Edition, mainly intended for Kickstarter backers.

What are people saying about Book 1?
This week, Elise got an e-mail from one reader, saying: “Initiation! Wow! What a book! I started reading Sunday evening and finished on Monday. I could not put it down! So many exciting, suspenseful visions. I loved all your descriptions of the color of the flowers, made me feel that I was there with my eyes. Loved the description of your smells, I could smell it! My favorite was how you captured Dutch’s accent. I’m Dutch myself and you nailed it! Your book gave me so many new insights to what Lewis and Clark must have experienced.”
Not only was Elise blown away by Sean T’s enthusiasm, but also, she felt impressed that he could read 588 pages in one day!
Now Book 2 is almost finished.
